Getting ready for the Millennium -- A renewed commitment at the Campus Christian Center

Nearly 70 years ago a group of Protestants, lay and clergy, decided that they had the courage to cooperate across the stubborn lines of denominationalism in order to provide a much needed ministry to students coming to the University of Idaho from throughout the state. The result was the creation of The Idaho Institute of Christian Education, Inc., to serve as an agency of the cooperating churches, allowing them to do together what no one of them could do by themselves. Over the years a well-located student center has been provided and staffed in the heart of the campus to serve the spiritual needs of students while they are away from their home communities.

The founders of the Institute initiated their courageous effort in 1930, right at the beginning of one of the most serious economic depressions in the history of this country. Today, as we look towards a new century, we again need the courage to commit ourselves to a vision of cooperation that will allow us not only to continue this vital ministry, but to make it one of the most effective in the country. For this reason the Board of Trustees is seeking to build a solid Endowment for the Campus Christian Center, and is also re-evaluating and re-directing its program with the help of leadership from the cooperating churches.

A SOLID ENDOWMENT IS SOUGHT FOR THE NEXT 70-YEARS

The Board of Trustees is seeking a modest endowment of $300,000 to stabilize the financial basis of this venerable testimony to inter-church cooperation to serve students at the University of Idaho. We are at the half-way mark in this effort ($150,000). Make plans now to contribute to this worthy cause on behalf of youth. Help provide the resources necessary for the Campus Christian Center to carry on its effective work with young people on into the 21st Century.

Helping where it hurts -- the Center's mission

The Campus Christian Center provides an opportunity for you and your church to reach out to the high percentage of unchurched youth who come to the university. The Center serves all students who come through its doors. It's an "emergency room" for the walking wounded; it's a "helping hand" where one is needed; it's a place to get your bearings when the rush of campus life becomes too much.

From the outside, it's a symbol of churches cooperating together for a good cause; it's a reminder, at a secular university, that "God's in God's heaven and all's right with the world"; and its serves as a challenge to our highly scientific and technological age that there are moral and spiritual values which need to be taken seriously.

The big theological division in our society is not between Christian conservatives and the Christian liberals; instead, the really big division is between faith and lack of faith. Many of our young people today do not have an understanding of life that is adequate to help them live positive, constructive and happy lives. Our Center is here to help.
